About this talk

Incarnated language speaks to the patient’s bodily and affective experience rather than speaking about it. Speaking in these ways must come from deep resonances within the therapist’s own somatic experience in the session. This talk expands the more traditional definitions of countertransference to a broader conceptualization of the therapist’s capacity for somatic resonance as a fundamental source for the understanding and enlivening of the patient’s sensate and unconscious experience. Direct, analytic engagement and exploration of somatic experience will be illustrated through case vignettes demonstrating sensate focus, movement, and physical contact between therapist and patient.

About the Speaker

William F. Cornell, MA, TSTA (P), maintains an independent private practice of psychotherapy and consultation in Pittsburgh, PA.  Having studied behavioral psychology at Reed College in Portland, Oregon and phenomenological psychology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he followed his graduate program with training in transactional analysis and body-centered psychotherapy. He has studied with several mentors and consultants within diverse psychoanalytic perspectives and offers frequent training and consultation programs in Europe.  Bill is the author of Explorations in Transactional Analysis: The Meech Lake Papers, Somatic Experience in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy: In the expressive language of the living (Routledge), Self-Examination in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy: Countertransference and subjectivity in clinical practice (Routledge), At the Interface of Transactional Analysis, Psychoanalysis, and Body Psychotherapy: Theoretical and clinical perspectives (Routledge)), Une Vie Pour Etre Soi (Payot), a co-author and editor of Into TA: A comprehensive textbook (Karnac), and author and co-editor of The Evolution of a Relational Paradigm in Transactional Analysis: What’s the Relationship Got to Do with It?, as well as numerous articles and book chapters.  Bill edited and introduced The Healer’s Bent: Solitude and dialogue in the clinical encounter, by James T. McLaughlin, Intimacy and Separateness in Psychoanalysis, by Warren Poland, and Emotional Communication and Therapeutic Change by Wilma Bucci.  A coeditor of the Transactional Analysis Journal for fifteen years, he is now the Editor of the Routledge book series, Innovations in Transactional Analysis. Bill is a recipient of the Eric Berne Memorial Award and the European Association for Transactional Analysis Gold Medal, in recognition of his writing.  Various of his books have been translated into French, Italian, Korean, and Russian.  He is a member of the International Transactional Analysis Association, the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy, the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.

About the Discussant

Steven Tublin, PhD, is faculty, training and supervising analyst at the William Alanson White Institute, and on the faculties at NYU Postdoc and at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity. He is also credentialed in the practice of Somatic Experiencing, a body-based approach to the resolution of trauma. He is the author of a number of articles on topics including contemporary psychoanalytic technique, the use of music and literature in clinical inquiry, and the interface of politics and psychoanalysis.  His treatment approach blends psychoanalytic and somatic techniques. Dr. Tublin also applies this methodology to work contexts as an associate at Upstart Logic, an organizational consultancy based in Rhode Island.
